Dans 1834 le jeune peintre français , prosper marilhat a montré une vue de la place ezbekiyah , le caire et trois autres scènes égyptiennes au salon de paris . Comme beaucoup de sa génération , il avait ressenti une envie agitée de voyager et avait rejoint une expédition scientifique dirigée par un baron autrichien , karl von hugel , au proche-orient . L'artiste allait mourir , insensé , juste vieilli thirty-six , et sa scène du caire ne survit que dans une impression .
